Fabric Dreams

Black-Eyed Suzie in the Press, Things I did Today (or Yesterday)Your Name10 Comments

There are three places where I cannot control myself: bookstores, music stores and fabric stores.  Upon entering any one of these little shangri-las, I am immediately enraptured and enslaved - drooling and compelled to spend all kinds of money I don't have.  (And yet, there's a strange little plastic card in my wallet that tells me the sweet lies I'm dying to hear. "Go on" it says, "you have the money".  I try to fight: "But it's not real, actual money," I insist,  "I really shouldn't."  Then the little card gives me a wink and whispers those three deliciously evil  words: "It's real enough".)  These places embody the promise of something beautiful, something urgent and necessary that I haven't yet experienced, something that will make my life complete.  They are the aesthete's crack. My solution is simply to avoid these places altogether. After all, I have books that I haven't yet read, cds I've barely listened to, and  yards upon yards of untouched fabric;  I don't need more. But every once in a while, an opportunity arises that is too tempting.   Enter Marlene, Fabric Siren.

Fabric all

Marlene is from Montreal but lives in England.  Her 93-year-old mother died recently, so Marlene is here selling her mother's house and belongings, and because her mother used to make clothing, there are entire trunks and  boxes of vintage fabric in the house.  A few weeks back,  Marlene heard me interviewed on the CBC  for a radio piece about selling handmade items online, looked up my blog and contacted me to see if I'd be interested in buying some of the fabric. Mosaicdb0830039e885914c019185e5b7477bcfb4e5b57
Interested?? Heaps of beautiful vintage lace, silk, cotton; I think you can guess how it all went down.  She very sweetly made me hot chocolate, opened the magic trunks, and gave me an incredibly good deal;  I left that sweet little house loaded down with bags of embroidered dreams.  Maybe I don't need it, but I'm so grateful to have it.  It's all of beautiful quality, and I love that it has a history.  Vintage fabric just feels different, both in the tactile and the woowoo senses of the word.  I think it will be perfect for the batch of Alice dolls in my head, demanding to be born.

Also a big thank you to everyone who attended and/ or commented on my recent shop update - I truly appreciate your support!  Thirteen of the little ladies were gone within two hours, which was heartwarming to see.  I just have to keep them from getting big heads - dolls are, by nature, quite vain.

She also stars in one of my two new Valentine's Day prints.  Now, as you might have garnered from my blog, I am very much in love with my dear Mr. L., and yet I have a morbid streak that  compels me to flout the warm, sweet sentiments of Valentine's for stories of heartbreak and love gone horribly awry.  Abandoned young girls?  Eviscerated grooms?  Oh dear....

*Some important changes to my Shipping & Insurance Policies*

Every January, Canada Post rewards its faithful customers with a rate increase, so my shipping rates have gone up by about a dollar for dolls (this is still slightly less than the actual cost of shipping + materials).  Also, I will no longer automatically insure items under $175 shipped outside of Canada.  Items shipped outside of Canada are insured up to $100, so please contact me as soon as you purchase if you would like to purchase additional insurance ($2).  Items over $175 will automatically be insured for the full amount.  Also, tracking is available within the US for an additional cost; please contact me if you would like tracking.

Dolls (Mine), Ye Olde Shoppe UpdatesYour Name12 Comments

My most recent group of dolls don't really have a theme per se - I just tried to use more colour than usual in effort to rebel against the frozen drabness of January.  My dolls' hair and clothes continue to become more and more asymmetrical, which is fun because it gives me a lot of freedom and I really enjoying texturing fabric.  I'm posting the first ten dolls today and will post the next four on Tuesday.

Winnie, in the upper right-hand corner, is the doll whose proceeds will go to Doctor's Without Borders Haitian relief fund.  I named her after a little girl that was rescued after three days buried under the rubble.

I'm also working on a couple of prints; just keeping my fingers crossed that I can finish them by Wednesday.

The other night, my dear friend Christina (who, like Tara, I met in grade seven - in fact I met them on the very same day) hosted a clothing swap.  You know those clothes that you have that you still love but know you'll never wear again?  Maybe you've outgrown them, physically or aesthetically, or maybe you're in the mood for something new but you don't want to spend a bunch of money.  Well, if you get a roomful of people together who have roughly the same taste in clothing, this can be a great alternative to shopping.  Personally, I loathe shopping: all the traipsing about from shop to shop exhausts me and the brightly lit change rooms seem as though they must have been invented by someone who truly hates women and wants us to feel bad about ourselves.  But at Christina's, we had food and wine and music, and tried the clothes on in her non-threatening, lamp-lit bedroom.  How civilized!  I snagged some new-old sweaters, some very fly sunglasses, and this super-cute purse:

But would you believe when I say that my new prized possession was this Dolly Parton mug?  Who would give this away?
 Dolly back Dolly front
Some people, upon hearing of my love for Dolly, accuse me of being ironic.  Not so!  I know her appearance over the last few decades has made her rife for caricature, but I genuinely love a lot of her music and she's a very charming person.  I once saw her interviewed and when asked if she supported gay marriage she said, "Of course - I don't see why y'all shouldn't suffer as much of the rest of us."  Love her.

Though mostly known for her own music, Dolly has written over 3,000 songs, most of which have been performed by other musicians.  If you, like me,  felt somewhat assaulted by the high production value of Whitney Houston's ubiquitous version of I Will Always Love You back in the 90s (thought I admit the high note was impressive) you might like Dolly's original and much subtler version, which is so sweet it chokes me up. (And check out Porter Wagoner's crazily awesome hair & jacket combo at the beginning!

Finally, just a few quick things: I've decided to start posting replies to comments directly in the comments section rather than sending them by email. I do try to respond to all comments, but I don't always manage to.  I thought this way, when people ask questions, the answers could be there for all to see, and I can also respond to a few comments at once rather than each one individually, in case there are common threads.  But I do read each and every comment and I appreciate them all.DSC03603

Also, the dolls for my next shop update are nearly all finished!  The update will take place Wednesday, January 27th at 2:00 pm Eastern time and will include 15 new dolls.  I'll post the official banner announcement this weekend, and photos/ descriptions of all dolls over the next few days.  Also, if you would like to receive an email reminder on the day of the update itself, you can always  sign up for my newsletter; the badge is in the upper right-hand corner of this blog, just under the banner.

Tata for now dears!

Sometimes I feel like posting but then realize that I don't have an idea in my head!  Bad news for someone whose living is dependent upon ideas, but I'm sure something will come to me soon enough.  So forgive me if this post is a bit rambly and unfocused - it will be just be one of those "what I'm up to" posts, which I guess is what this blog is all about really.

I have several new dollies on the go, in various states of completion and undress.  Some have legs but no  clothes, some of dresses but no arms; all are feeling the chill of baldness.

Doll wips
Those with dresses are being quite cruel to the ones still nude; they've taken to sitting on their very own shelf, sneering and making all manner of insensitive remarks about how even old burlap bags would be easier on the eyes than the sight of those naked, knobbly knees.  Girls can be so horrible.

Dolls sitting
But then of course, the problem with hierarchies is no matter who you mistreat to get a leg up, there's always someone else's boot heel above you. My china dolls, all decked out in their finery and full heads of hair think these little bald upstarts are no better than they should be.

Mo doll

They sit on the shelves above and scoff, "We could step on you and make another just like you".  I plead for peace but it's every doll for herself.  I've caught them kicking one another in ankles, but least I don't have to worry about too much hair-pulling.

Katie doll

Whew - so much drama.  Before I break up any more squabbles, I'd like to give a shout out to my friend Kiki, who has just opened her very own Etsy shop.  Kiki gives new life to old things by repainting,  decorating and personalizing them.  Behold this lovely little cabinet - doesn't it look like the perfect place to lock up a bunch of brawling dollies?

Kiki dresser

Lastly, on a sad note, I'm praying for all the people of Haiti; Montreal has the largest Haitian population outside Haiti, so I'm also thinking of all those here who are grieving.  If there are any Canadians reading, here is a web page outlining the government's pledge to match all donations made by Canadians to registered humanitarian charities; this way, in donating whatever amount you can, it's really as if you're giving double the amount.   I'm planning to dedicate the proceeds of a sale from my next update to Doctors Without Borders, and I'll be sure to announce which doll it will be ahead of time.

Here's a little video for anyone who might be feeling nostalgic for the holiday season now that we've all had to return to the prosaic realities of 'real' life, courtesy of my dear friends Tara and Matt.  Tara is an actor and generally damn funny lady; we met on the first day of grade 7 in our hometown of Toronto over twenty (!!) years ago now.  Matt is her dashing, rock-star husband from New Jersey, which makes him awesome because that also happens to be where my other husband, Bruce Springsteen, is from. (Yes, Mr. L knows - he's fine with it.)

They live way too far away in LA now, but, like the troopers  they are, they make it back to the frozen North every year or so that we can all eat stinky French cheese and drain bottles of cheap red wine.  They, along with my friend Jenna,  played a beautiful song at my wedding and now they play for you!  And in case you're feeling unsure that you have the minutes to spare,  this little treat features an accordian, a paper martini, one of my all-time favourite Christmas songs (see the title of this post for clues) and a very handsome grey cat named Archie.  And some Sam Adams.  How could it possibly not be the greatest?

A Very Good Year

Dolls (Mine), Things I did Today (or Yesterday)Your Name16 Comments

Despite sounding like the title of a futuristic, dystopian film, 2010 has been quite lovely so far.  And while I'm  generally both superstitious and circumspect, and don't like to tempt the gods by being too optimistic, I'm throwing caution to the wind and putting forth this brazenly happy list:

Three Reasons Why I Love 2010 so Far

1.  I am literally one day away from finishing the first draft of my first novel.  It's been six years (off and on) so this is huge for me.  I still have a thorough rewrite on the horizon, but a complete draft feels very significant; it's like having a whole skeleton. Blood and guts to follow...

2.  My dolls now have transportation...

4248285501_0ae42f66af
...in the form of this most-excellent Penny-Farthingale bike made for by Mr. L.,once again earning his title. It has a little leather seat and real pedals that go all the way around.

3.  I'm taking a course called Sexuality in 18th Century British Literature.  I've always been interested in the Restoration and court life, and as so many 18th C. writers were connected to the monarchy - and rather pervy - there promises to be some juicy stuff.

I hope all you all lovely holidays.  We had a very nice time in Maine, and Mr. L's mom had decorated the house so beautifully.  Instead of erecting a traditional Christmas tree, she decorated her Gardenia tree and the whole place felt warm and cheerful.

Mosaicd39e8a1e18dbf30aab63a6f255a9b499c3bddc17

There were also all kinds of  sweet, tiny objects around the house, including these darling animals, which were about the size of a quarter:

Mosaic179a9da237131a113e0f413a7f416052f317cbad

We took along our little black friend because of his recent feline asthma diagnosis and he fared very well; he spent the entire eight hour drive quite sitting quite calmly  on my lap (each way) but looked up and let out an irate  miaow  every few minutes just to be sure I knew that he did not approve of the whole situation. I told him I completely understood.  We were back in time for new year's eve when we cleaned the whole apartment (I even reorganized my linen closet)  and drank champagne, which made it so much more fun than usual (hence an hour of my life devoted to tidy linens!)

Finally, in case I don't already prattle on enough, there's a little interview about me on Paul Grimsley's InToViews website, which you can find here.  Now I must return to my latest batch of girls, but first I wish you all health and happiness in the new year!!

Happy Happies from Alice and All of Us

This will be a short post as we are leaving tomorrow for Maine and as always, I have all sorts of last-minute thingys to finish; Mr. L's present, laundry, general tidying to make the place presentable for the cat-sitter.  But I mentioned a special project, and you may remember back in the summer I mused about a future Alice in Wonderland update.  Well, the future is here.  I think I kept putting it off because it seems like such a very big and daunting idea, and because - as it does for so many - Alice in Wonderland means so much to me, as a book but also as an aesthetic and as a greater world.  I'm also pretty fascinated by Lewis Carroll the writer as the public face of Charles Dodgson, the professor and photographer and his preoccupation with Alice Liddell.  But I'll save the academic wanking for a later post.  For now, I'll just...Alice!

I couldn't find any good Alice-related Christmas images, so here is a sweet little Edward Gorey cat (found here).  A Happy Christmas and New Year and whatever else you might celebrate from me, Mr. L. and the kitty/ dolly menagerie!!

Quel plaisir!  Yes, it's true; the other Mr. Postman rang my bell (ahem - I mean that quite literally, of course) and handed me a lovely little package all the way from Australia.  I was so delighted to find the sweetest letter and this gorgeous little portrait from Monika Viktoria, the adoptive mother of both Philomena and Cecily:

I think it is a lovely likeness of Philomena, and you can see more of Monika's beautiful artwork on her blog, The Long Lost Woods.

I've been working long hours on a special project that I'm not quite ready to share, but I hope to take pictures tomorrow and will definitely post them before we leave for Maine for Christmas with Mr. L's parents.  In the meantime, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the whole dismal showing at Copenhagen might not end as bleakly as it seemed.  I've long despised the Harper government, but his actions (or lack thereof) at this conference have been particularly shameful. I would apologize as a Canadian, but then I fear I would somehow be associating myself with him.  Ick. But rather than end on a sour note, I'll leave you with a picture of the one doll I've managed to finish and photograph since my last update; a little splash of colour on this very cold day.

Making Spaces

How to be a Domestic GodessYour Name13 Comments

I confess that I'm a sucker for design shows and I have secret love for Martha Stewart.  But we don't have a  t.v. and I can't really justify the cost of Martha's mag, especially given that it's jammed full of ideas I know I'll never execute and recipes I'll probably never cook; basically, it's domesticity porn. (Though I did once make Martha's recipe for Meyer lemon cake for Mr. L's birthday. Lemon cake, lemon icing, lemon curd, candied lemon slices; absolutely worth the days of lemon manipulation it required.)  So how does a girl with a secret domesticity fetish get her fix?

Shelves 1 Shelves 3

Well, aside from tittering away at Nigella Lawson on Youtube and taking Jamie Oliver books out from the library, what I did was whine for months about my studio space and how crammed full of stuff it was and how impossible it was to keep clean and other silly things I have no business complaining about.  And now that Mr. L has some time on his hands, he did for me the most wonderful thing.  Behold! Five  3' x 5' wall-mounted shelving units.  Better than a diamond, am I right ladies?

Shelves 2 Shelves 4
Now all the many, many things that used teeter precariously while piled up on my desk or few narrow little shelves are up on the walls and I have so muck desk space I could tap dance on them (my desks were also custom-built by mister L. back in the summer, so they line the whole room).  There's also one in the dining room which now doubles as my packing room.  A certain little black cat who loves small, enclosed spaces is delighted by all the new little cubbies - I think he thinks they were made especially for him.

So thank you, my love - you are too good to me.  And our apartment smells now like pine; I think Martha would love it.

Given that I've so thoroughly outed myself as a grown woman who plays with dolls, it probably won't come as a shock that where Christmas is concerned, I'm a 5'9 six-year-old.  Christmas lights are one of my very favourite things on earth, and my neighbourhood is all a-twinkle.  In the bougier parts of town where some of my friends live, the lights are lovely but decidedly tasteful.  Well down here in the PSC, people don't mess around with subtlety or lightness of touch.  So much the better, I say; there's no tree too tacky, no house too gaudy.  I want my lights in all the colours of the rainbow and bright, brighter, brightest!  Thank you, people of the PSC, for giving me a Griswald Christmas. Tonight Mr. L and I went for a chilly but cheerful walk around the neighbourhood after our swim at the local community centre; come see what we saw...Mosaicbec7314cba7d5f8db199deacb004cf73ab342fb1
I don't know if it's a Québec thing, but before moving here, I'd never seen these very funny inflated Christmas creatures.  Some of them even play music:

Yes indeed, that's Santa in a helicopter up there in the upper left-hand corner.  But that's also him in his more traditional sleigh in the lower right, so old Santa values collide with modern Santa merely a block apart; the reindeer are beside themselves.

House on grand trunk
But I think this house takes the Griswald gold medal; I try to walk past it at least once a day because it makes me so happy. It faces a lovely little park where even the streetlamps look like oversized Christmas lights:

Well, I'm off to watch Julie & Julia with Mr. L, a movie about which I'm a little too excited and only slightly bitter.  Excited because I found the book immensely entertaining and bitter because when I was living in the woods in Maine and home alone all day, I took some Julia Child cookbooks out from the library and made all sorts of absurd-yet-delicious things like puff pastry amuse-bouches and raspberries in little chocolate bowls (made by pouring melted chocolate over inflated balloons, then popping them - I kid you not).  But did I think of writing a blog about it, then getting a book deal, then selling the movie rights then rolling around in my suitcases of money?  Nooooo. I did not.  But that was the year I started making dolls, so I'm grateful for that.  I'm sure someday very soon, the charming and beautiful Amy Adams will play me in a movie about my life as a doll-maker and Meryl Streep will play Mr. L..   Erm wait, no - that's not quite right.  Clive Owen will play Mr. L and Meryl will play my alter ego and then the entire cast and I will roll around in our suitcases of cash.

Perfect.

Holiday Update: Champagne, Cranberries & Snow

Dec. 09 update banner for blog

Mr.L and I have been working away like elves on ritalin, getting as many new dollies, ornaments and pendants finished as we can for the pre-holiday update (this will be the last one before the new year).    The update will take place Tuesday, December 1st at 5pm Eastern/ 2 pm Pacific.  To convert this to a different time zone, click here.  Just a reminder: I ship from Canada and if you're thinking of giving anything from the Black-Eyed Suzie workshop as a Christmas gift, if should ordered by Dec. 2nd so that I can ship it in time for Canada Post's suggested mailing dates.  (Sadly, the date for International packages by regular mail will have passed by the time the update takes place, however it's stil quite possible .that things ordered after Dec. 1st for Europe can arrive on time. Please see here for suggested mailing dates within Canada and for express options).  I know it must seem terribly early, but I wouldn't want anyone to be disappointed.

Ten new dolls are pictured in the post immediate below this one; busts, new ornaments and pendants still to come (and maybe a few more dolls if my fingers don't fall off first in protest).

The Good, the Bad and the Next Shop Update

Black-Eyed Suzie in the Press, Ye Olde Shoppe UpdatesYour Name8 Comments

This past week has been a bit of an emotional  rollercoaster here in Suzie-ville; some lovely and exciting things have happened, as well as a few of the crappier variety.  On the less pleasant side,  I had yet another computer fiasco and my dear, sweet life-facilitator is now idling at the mac shop, leaving me to (yes, again!) labour away on a seven-year old laptop.  Of course, I realize that as far as catastrophes this one is, well, not one at all.  But it is a reminder of just how very dependent I am on a machine.  Sort of creepy, actually.  But in the 'good things' category, I was interviewed a few months back for an article on Etsy and micromanfacturing, and it ran this in the Life & Style section of this weekend's  Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper. You can read the online version here.

G&M article

Probably the most exciting thing for me was the large photo of the divine Ms. Kelly they ran; it has led to many emails and some possibly other exciting media-type goodness, but my suspicious nature doesn't permit me to name it until it's actually taken place.  We shall see...

DSC02939

Back to the bad, my poor kitty (pictured here keeping Vampire Bess warm) was coughing unusual coughs last week, so  we took him to the vet and found out he has asthma.  Who knew??  I don't think I've ever heard of kitty asthma, but they have lungs too, so I guess it's not that weird.  But that bad becomes a good because it is treatable and after a few days of his medication, he's wheeze-free.

Good again: I finally made some gift certificates for the shop, which I think are pretty cute.  Both digital and paper verisons are available here.

Gc wide

Last in the 'bad' category is that my husband and the three other writers on his TV show were unceremoniously laid off with no warning two months before their job was supposed to end.  Merry Christmas, faithful employees!  In the words of a dear, French friend of ours in the same field, "C'est juste une maudite gagne de crosseur de poule morte!"  But let's turn that frown upside down; now I have a full-time (and exceedingly handsome) elf to assist with all my doll-making needs.  He's a very talented sander and varnisher and with his help, I'm getting more done than I dreamed possible.

Dolls 1

Here are few of the little ones we've been working on, all decked out in their Christmas colours.  I'm not a big fan of bright red or forest green (except when it's in a forest of course) so I've chosen colours inspired by cranberries, champagne and snow (incidentally, also three things I love!)

Dolls 2

These ladies and several others will make their debut on Tuesday, December 1st at 5:00 pm Eastern/ 2:00 pm Pacific.  I'll be back with an official shop update banner in a day or two, once a few of these little darlings have some hair.

A party dress and a bald head in November? Brrr...The dolls say non!

Her Diamond Heart

Adornments & Wearables, MusicYour Name8 Comments

Sunday night we went to see two beautiful mavens of contemporary folk, Marissa Nadler and Alela Diane.  They both have beautiful voices and are great songwriters, and Alela's concert was very stripped-down and pure, much like her c.d.. (It's interesting how some performers are very consistent live, whereas some do completely unexpected things in concert;  I've seen Neko Case perform three times and each time was different; once she brought a Baltic women's choir onstage, once an eighty-year-old female yodelling champion.  I love them both!)   I hadn't heard much from Nadler before except one song which I loved called Diamond Heart.  But having heard the recording didn't prepare me for seeing her perform it live, which actually brought tears to my eyes.  She was very nervous and shy onstage, but when she sang this song, her voice was so clear and haunting, a word that gets overused these days, but is accurate in this case; it was perfect.

Picture 1

Here she is looking like an ethereal, gothy, desert fairy.  I'll take that dress, please!  And because I've somehow managed to delete my new playlist, to which I'd added that song, here she is singing it live so beautifully in what looks to be a pretty rinky-dink little cd shop; but still, she sounds amazing.

I'm busily working away on new dolls, ornaments and pendants for my next shop update which will take place as early in December as possible.  But my back is  starting to complain about all the sculpting and  sanding of teeny tiny heads, so I can't push it too hard.  Most of the new pieces are still in the early stages, but I have finished one little piece; this rather tragic-looking pendant:

Thank you so much to all who have left comments recently about the new dolls for this month's update; I've dropped the ball and haven't had time to reply to any  left in the past week or so, but I read them all and appreciate them so much.  The update went swimmingly and I'm delighted anew each time that people actually remember and attend and adopt and it's just so fun for all of us. (The dolls and me, that is - not me and all my other personalities.  Although maybe they amount to the same thing?  And even Mr. Lovely gets swept in the fun...)

Also, it occurred to me the other day that many of the new girls have short hair, which is relatively new for me, and that maybe this was an instance of art imitating life. Or maybe just me imitating me, because I recently got my hair cut short for the first time since I was eleven, when my grandmother took me to see her favourite hairdresser at the stripmall across the street from her apartment building.  Now, had I been a few years older and had already been saturated by the forthcoming adolescent cynicism and snobbery, the fact that this was the preferred stylist of a seventy-year-old woman AND the fact that she worked out of a suburban mall might have tipped me off that I was not going to walk out of there the as the diminuitive fashionista I imagined myself to be.  But at that tender age, I was so excited to be going to a real hairdresser, I went like a lamb to the slaughter, earnestly  bearing my photo of Olivia Newton John circa Let's Get Physical and said, 'Make me look like this'.

But no, gentle reader, you guess correctly: I did not come out looking like Olivia.  I came out looking a little like Andy Gibb, only less feminine.  I came out with shortish, feathered mullet and in equally short order, I was mistaken for a boy.  So traumatized was I by that haircut, I swore never again.  But after I broke my knee this summer and realized I'd be washing my hair in the sink for a month, I rediscovered a small, brave place inside me.  I'd also recently  been crushing out a little on Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica circa season 1 (I think nerds everywhere will agree, she's so fracking hot!) and wondered if I could pull it off.

Finally, Mr. Lovely assured me there's no way I could, at this point in my life, be mistaken for a boy, so he chopped those locks off.  And I'll be damned if he isn't a million times better with a pair of scissors than that butcher in the mall, not to mention the stylists at many high-priced chichi-poopoo salons I've dropped over $100 in (back in the days when I actually spent money on haircuts - never again!)  So, there you have it - a happy ending to sad hair story.  Short is cute and easy and I might never go back...

In other news, Mr. Lovely and I took a beautiful walk along the canal today and saw a beaver, which was very odd, as we had just been talking about beaver dams (an unusual topic in itself) when a nice man with his dog pointed and said "un castor" and there he was, chewing away on a scrap of wood with his giant chompers.  Very unexpected when one lives in an a teeming metropolis, so we urged him to make haste and find a safe place for the winter.  Then, almost as exciting, I found the motherload of eye candy, issue nine of Lula at the newsstand in the market after I'd all but given up hope.  I'd even tried to order it from a place in NYC, and after three weeks they refunded my money and said they wouldn't be getting a second shipment after all.  Sigh.  It's all the soft-lit, cotton candy, fashiony goodness I hoped it would be.

Well, I just got the cats high on catnip, and it's shaping up to be a pretty exciting evening here chez Faber, so I must dash.  Tata for now!

The update is fast approaching and I have been a busy little bee; I have to get out in the sunshine for a bit before I become a pasty beast.  I mentioned yesterday that I would try to post some full-length shots; I have some, but I had to go the quick and dirty route and apologize as this is not my best mosaic work.  The close-up mosaics (in the post immediately below this one) are much better.  I always seem to miscalculate just how long the whole business of taking and editing photos takes, even with the help of my favourite husband (thanks baby!)

But these should give you some idea of clothing and scale, so without further excuses...
